X06 Uses Windows XP and GRU's Transmitter

15 October 2014

The following is a description of a very interesting transmission that took place on October 14th.

At about 07:20 UTC we spotted a carrier on 10755 kHz, a frequency commonly used by the Russian military intelligence agency GRU for unscheduled E06 and S06 with ID 975. The carrier had a characteristic of one of GRU's transmitters - that is, the transmitter hum present on both side bands, the actual audio on the upper, and only traces of it on the lower. Expecting E06 or S06 to start any time soon, we started recording.

However, at 07:42:05 UTC, X06 began on this frequency with the tone sequence 154263, which lasted until 07:46:43 UTC. This was followed by the the Windows XP USB disconnect sound at 07:47:44 UTC, and the carrier remained silent until it ceased at about 08:32 UTC.

The following is a recording of this event:

X06 is believed to be a station of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and unrelated to intelligence operations. Do they just share the transmitters, or is X06 also a GRU operation?

These two are E06 recordings from August 14th, 15:05 UTC, 13898 kHz, and October 2nd, 16:00 UTC, 18724 kHz, respectively. Note the same transmitter noise in the background as in the above recording.
