History

E18 was first heard on September 3rd and 4th, 1989, both days at 20:00 UTC on 8072 kHz with the same message.[2] It was not heard again until 1997, when it turned up on two schedules.[3] While the 1989 transmission used AM mode with notoriously poor modulation, the later ones were in LSB mode.

The following are the schedules that turned up in 1997:

  • 2nd Wednesday/Thursday at 21:00 UTC (November - March: 22:00), ID 269 for messages 23 groups or shorter, ID 307 otherwise
    • April - October: 8025 kHz
    • November - March: 6545 kHz
  • 2nd Thursday at 05:00 UTC (November - March: 06:00), ID 718
    • April - October: 7455 kHz
    • November - March: Unknown
  • 2nd Friday at 06:00 UTC (November - March: 07:00), ID 718 (repeat of above)
    • April - October: 7575 kHz
    • November - March: Unknown

The ID's 269 and 307 remained active until December 2002. The final message had ID 269, carried the serial number 186, and contained 18 groups.[1]
